Module: Lesson III " Role of Technology for Teaching and Learning "

1. Technology as a tutor. Together with the teacher, technology can support the teacher to teach another person or technology when programmed by the teacher can be a tutor on its own.

2. Technology as a teaching tool. Like a tutor, technology is a teaching tool, but can never replace a teacher. This is like a handy man which is just a there to be reached.

3. Technology as a learning tool. While the teachers utilizes technology as the tool for teaching. Likewise it is an effective tool for learning.

A. FOR TEACHERS AND TEACHING

1. Technology provides enormous support to the teachers as the facilitator of learning.

2. Technology has modernized the teaching-learning environment.

3. Technology improves teaching-learning process and ways of teaching.

4. Technology opens new field in educational researches.

5. Technology adds to the competent of teachers and inculcates scientific outlook.

6. Technology supports teacher professional development.

B. FOR LEARNERS AND LEARNING

1. Support learners on how to learn on their own.

A. Declarative knowledge consist of the discrete pieces of information that answers the question what, who, when, and where.

B. Stuctural knowledge  consist of facts of pieces of declarative knowledge put together to attain some form of meaning.

C. Procedural knowledge is knowledge in action or the knowledge of how to do something. It is based on facts but learned through the process of procedural knowledge.

2. Technology enhances learners' communication skill through social interactions.

A. Point to point two-way or one-to-one like internet chat, phone conversation or even face-to-face converaation.

B. One-to-many outbound like a lecture, or television. There is no social interaction.

C. Many-to-many like group discussion, buzz session. Heads together. This kind of interaction provides opportunities for social interaction.

Social interaction through communication occurs:

Through technology- directly between two persons via email, a cell phone or other communication technology.

Around technology- like students discussing a problem posed by a software program.

Support of technology- like teachers and students interacting about the worksheet printed from a website.

Benefits Derived from Technology

A. Enables any teachers to guide the learners virtually and making learning unlimited because communication and social interaction go beyond the school day or a school environment.

B. Enhances students' freedom to express and exchange ideas freely without the snooping eyes of the teacher face to face.

C. Enables learner to contract meaning from joint experiences between the two or more participants in communication.

D. Help learners solve problems from multiple sources since there is limitless sources of information that the teacher can direct or refer to the learners.

E. Teaches learners to communicate with politeness, taking turns and sending information and giving appropriate feedback.

F. Enhances elaboration by using communication strategies with wider community and individuals in a boarderless learning environment.

G. Develops critical thinking, problem solving and creativity through out the communication.

3. Technology upgrades learners' higher-order-thinking skills: critical thinking, problem solving and creativity.

Seven Creative Strategies( Osborn, 1963) Labelled as SCRAMPER

1. Substitute- find something else to replace to do what is does.

2. Combine- blend to two things that do not usually go together.

3. Adapt- look for another ways they can be used.

4. Modify/ Magnify/ Minify- make a change, enlarge, decrease.

5. Put to another use- find another uses.

6. Eliminate- reduce, remove.

7. Reverse- turn upside-down, inside out, front-side, back.

 Reflection
Using technology in the classroom enable teachers and students to find the new conclusion of daily life problems. Technology helps in education to create a better educational syllabus, learning material, and future products and services. It's really important to integrate technology into classrooms.
Today, more than ever, the role of educational technology in teaching is of great importance because of the use of information and communication technologies. With the help of various applications for distance education, the Internet, teachers, and students themselves, they see the advantage of educational technology.

Information technologies have affected every aspect of human activity and have a potential role to play in the field of education and training, specially, in distance education to transform it into an innovative form of experience. The need of new technologies in teaching learning process grows stronger and faster. The information age becomes an era of knowledge providing sound and unmatched feasibility for discovery, exchange of information, communication and exploration to strengthen the teaching learning process.Information technologies help in promoting opportunities of knowledge sharing throughout the world. These can help the teachers and students having up-to-date information and knowledge. Accurate and right information is necessary for effective teaching and learning; and information technologies (Haag, 1998; p.10) are “set of tools that can help provide the right people with the right information at the right time.” Students are independent and they can make best decisions possible about their studies, learning time, place and resources.Students are able to work in collaborative and interactive learning environments effectively communicating, sharing information and exchanging ideas and learning experiences with all in the environment.

Application

Teaching with technology can deepen student learning by supporting instructional objectives. However, it can be challenging to select the “best” tech tools while not losing sight of your goals for student learning.  Once identified, integrating those tools can itself be a challenge albeit an eye-opening experience.

Since educators rely on popular tablet computers to communicate with their students both inside and outside the classroom, while others use propriety software, social media and email to provide regular feedback, insight and instruction. Whatever the method, teachers across the country have latched onto technology as a means to remain better connected with students after classroom and office hours, or to more closely monitor students’ progress inside the classroom. As a  future teacher , my teaching method needs to be high tech since it is in 21st century, the learners are advance and they have to follow the flow of technology to improve their skills and make their learning more competent enough  .
